President Sri Lanka has agreed to replace his brothers as prime ministers in the temporary government proposed to resolve the political deadlock caused by the worst economic crisis in the country in decades, said a prominent member of the Friday parliament.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa agreed that the National Council would be appointed to name the prime minister and a new cabinet consisting of all parties in parliament, Member of Parliament Maithripala Sirisena said after meeting with the President.

Sri Lanka almost went bankrupt and had announced that they suspended their foreign loan payments. It must pay $ 7 billion in foreign debt this year, and $ 25 billion in 2026. Foreign reserves reached less than $ 1 billion.

The lack of foreign exchange has a very limited import, forcing people to wait in a long queue to buy important things such as food, fuel, cooking gas, and medicines.

Rajapaksa and his family, including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, have dominated almost every aspect of life in Sri Lanka for the past 20 years. The protesters who have packed the streets since March considers they are responsible for the crisis.
